IBM Power 6: There's hope, despite change in conversation factor

Hope signEarlier this year, Oracle increased the IBM Power 6 by 33% and removed the multi-core scaling factor (which lowered the price).  Since then, we've been asked the question "Is there any way to grandfather in a past agreement in terms of database licensing on IBM Power 6 machines?". As far as pre-conversion agreements, the answer is yes. There are a wide variety of options out there, but they need to be individually customized to each scenario.

You have a contract in place based upon a fixed point in time with specific terms and conditions.  Oracle will typically add more products - as we have historically seen in the last 3 years - to the list of servers that require less than one processor license per core requirement, and is usually.25, .50, or .75. Now, for the IBM situation it went the opposite way, so the position we're hearing is that clients can be entitled to grandfathering in past agreements by calling out specific core requirements and matching them up to specific licensing terms (e.g. seeking specific CSI numbers and aligning it/them with a particular license).  So, it requires a commitment of time and resources.

The conversion factors impact all products licensed by Processor excluding Standard Edition and Standard Edition One.  This means Database Enterprise Edition, Internet Application Server Enterprise Edition, WebLogic Server Enterprise Edition, WebLogic Suite, and hundreds of others (not just Database).
