Oracle to Cut Extended Support Pricing: What Does This Mean?Cost Savings piggy bank

Oracle announced that it will cut extended support prices last week at the International Oracle User Group's annual conference, COLLABORATE 09. Of course, any price relief from Oracle or any of the enterprise software companies are a blessing to companies today. But what does this really mean for Oracle customers?

Oracle is allowing older versions of its software to stay on life support for the next year (or maybe two, if you play your cards right), with short-term discounts for support and, in some cases, waived fee increases. By offering pricing relief for Oracle enterprises sticking to the older version of its software, the company is essentially eliminating the pressure of having to upgrade or pay increased support fees for older versions of software.

The announcement sounds as if you'll be saving hundreds of thousands, and you very well may be saving big bucks if you're a global Oracle enterprise with a well thought out global contract and a proper IT procurement office handling all transactions with software vendors. But the reality is that you're likely only saving about 2%.

What CIOs and people in IT have to remember is that cutting off Oracle support is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. We've seen companies discontinue Oracle support only to purchase it again at a higher price months later. The company loses its discount as Oracle will view the support purchase as a new deal and support will be re-priced based on current pricing. The rationale is that the lower support pricing was predicated on the original buy, where the best price/discount was given based on the amount spent.

Please note that the five Oracle applications eligible waived fee increases are Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 11i10, JD Edwards Enterprise 8.11, Siebel CRM 7.8, Oracle Database 10g R2 and PeopleSoft Enterprise 8.9.

Blister in the Sun? Oracle & Sun

Sun and Oracle logosLooks like Ellison is going shopping again at bargain prices with Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems. This could mean that Oracle is more in line with becoming a competitor to HP, even while touting a joint HP-Oracle Database Machine and Exadata Programmable Storage Server (only launched last year).

With Sun, Oracle will get more from the business relationships to sell into customers it already knows and expand into organizations where it may not have a current footprint. But how will that affect Sun customers? We think the pending acquisition will affect them in a big, big way. Through any M&A activities, it can be a big bonus for existing clients to renew contracts with value added services and bigger concessions. But there will be layoffs. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimates a loss of 5,500 to 10,000 jobs.

And, oy! What about the licensing? As seen with Hyperion, it was only a matter of time before its licensing practice and pricing was aligned with Oracle's methodology.  Right now, Sun is extremely lenient (to the point of being lax) when it comes to audits.  The company seldom enforces compliance and Sun clients know it. As long as clients keep buying, Sun doesn't audit.

We suggest current Sun customers complete an internal audit, get help, and get things in order. Bear in mind, Oracle takes compliance seriously. I've written a lot about Oracle and compliance issues -- here are some links to my blog posts that might be helpful in understanding Oracle's mindset.
