Observations on Oracle Open World 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco” quipped the late Oscar Wilde.
An estimated 45,000 Oracle devotees “disappeared” last week and descended upon San Francisco for Oracle’s Open World extravaganza, many spending upwards of $2,000 to get in the door. Every day and night there was a party, and food and beverage flowed. Reporters I ran into say they never saw anything like it before.
The streets between San Francisco’s Moscone convention center were closed so huge food tents could be set up to feed the attendees, and rumor had it that Oracle gave the city of San Francisco $15 million for the rights to do so.
The energy was high at the event and everywhere you turned within a several block perimeter you saw an Oracle Open World conference attendee (the conference issued name tags and back packs were a dead give away).
We came away from the event very impressed.
Oracle’s sweet on Linux…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Industry insiders say the love affair between Oracle and Sun has cooled. Witness what goes on internally at Oracle itself. According to Wim Coekaerts, Oracle's director of Linux engineering*, Oracle's own production servers are rolled out with Linux -- not Solaris -- and Linux is now the de facto standard platform for +8,000 Oracle developers.

...and so what about the Red Hat announcement?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In his keynote, Oracle’s CEO Larry Ellison said Oracle plans to offer an upper tier of support for Linux beyond what Red Hat provides. And with Oracle throwing its weight behind providing Linux support and the fact that a baseline Linux support contract will be priced at half what Red Hat charges, we think Oracle will be successful.
And that begs the question....
*Mr. Coekaerts is also known as “Oracle’s Mr. Linux”
Will Oracle eventually acquire Red Hat?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Remembering Oracle’s moves leading to its acquisition of Peoplesoft, it may well be that Oracle might be waiting for Red Hat's stock price to sink low enough before moving in for the kill, meaning an acquisition. Stay tuned.
