Is Co-Terminating Software Licenses Really in Your Best Interest?

Oracle and other software companies are able to reset multiple annual support renewal dates to a single date - taking many and consolidating to one. This is commonly referred to as co-termination.

The rational behind co-termination is relatively simple. Doing so results in: a) fewer dates to manage and; b) one support invoice annually to review. So that begs the question: if you had, say, more than one support invoice, why wouldn’t you co- terminate your Oracle support agreements?

Well, there can be important disadvantages you should be aware of. We'll list three that immediately come to mind:

1. Some organizations like to have the costs spread out across a year.
2. There’s a cost to co-terminate, dependant upon your Oracle support footprint and situation.
3. You may be unwittingly trading away important advantages by consolidating your multiple contracts into one.

The last bullet point carries the most risk. This is where we've seen companies-time and again-trade away literally hundreds of thousands of dollars of value without even being aware of it.

Conclusion: the decision and execution of an Oracle support co-termination is one that must be made carefully and with the help of an experienced Oracle license expert, as a misguided co-termination can have a significant $ effect on your overall cost of Oracle software license ownership now and in years to come.
