Leading Think Tank Says Oracle RAC Gains Momentum; Reliability Cited as Key Factor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To summarize the results of a recent study conducted by Forrester Research, Inc, most Oracle customers stated (35 participated in the study) that “Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) met or exceeded their high-availability requirements to support mission-critical database applications”.
The study went on to say that “Oracle RAC has come a long way in establishing itself as a key technology in delivering unparalleled high availability and scalability solutions for Oracle databases”.
It is estimated there are more than 1,200 Oracle customers who are currently using RAC in production, and this is likely to double in the next 12 to 18 months as enterprises look to deploy low-cost commodity servers and extend their applications to support higher availability.
Hardware Partitioning and Oracle Software Compliance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

More than a few Oracle clients utilize hardware partitioning on their servers, sometimes partitioning off as little as 1 to 4 CPU’s and then applying/installing Oracle’s SE database. That’s a big Oracle license compliance no-no.

Why? Because Oracle’s licensing rule specifically states that: SE cannot be licensed on a server with a capacity greater than 4 processors or multi-cores. And if SE is used as a part of RAC, then the total number of processors or multi-cores comprising the cluster also cannot exceed four (4) processors or multi- cores.
